A YOUNG man drowned in a pool at a 21st birthday party in Melbourne's east early yesterday.

Party-goers noticed the 22-year-old lying at the bottom of a Balwyn home's swimming pool about 3am.

When they pulled him out of the water he was not breathing, police said.

An ambulance was called and guests at the party tried to resuscitate the man, but they were unable to revive him.

Police would not comment on whether the man was drunk or on drugs at the time of his death. The death was not suspicious and has been referred to the coroner.

A spokesman for Life Saving Victoria urged people to take more care when drinking alcohol around water, noting that the 11 drownings in Victoria so far this year were four more than at the same time last year.
